Do What You Love: Kurve Boutique

Kurve Boutique
Tell me how and when everything started.
The Kurvy Inc lifestyle brand for kurvy women started in August 2010. I just had my third child and I was just so frustrated with not being able to find cute fashions and a community for kurvy women. After realizing that there was nothing out there that offered not only cute fashions, but also other products and services for what I needed, I started Kurvy Inc.

When did you first know that you wanted to be a business owner?
I was in the 9th grade and my English teacher at the time was going around asking all of the students what we wanted to do because now was the time to figure it out. I remember thinking to myself that I want to be my own boss and determine my own worth. So when it was my turn I said, “I want to be my own boss and own my own business.” At the time I wanted to own a nightclub but as time went on the type of business I wanted to own changed. I was 14 years old and I knew I wanted to own my business and major in Business in college.

Where do you get your inspiration for your shop?
My inspiration for my boutique and company comes from my 11-year-old daughter Jada. She is a fireball in every area, lol. She is a free spirited girl who just loves to have fun. Her love for people and life is something you rarely see in people these days. She loves to push the envelope with what she wears and does. Jada inspires me to keep moving forward with my dreams and boutique because I’m building a brand not only for the kurvy women but also for the kurvy girls out there. I want all the little kurvy girls to know that they are fine just the way they are and to always love themselves no matter what.

What advice would you give someone considering a similar path?
The number one piece of advice I would give to anyone who is either on a similar path as me, or wants to own there own business, is to never give up. It’s going to be hard and you will have thoughts of stopping but don’t. Whenever you feel you can’t go on just think about all of the other companies or people that would not be here if they did not continue to fight for their dreams like Apple Computers, Beyonce, Kimora Lee Simmons, and even Wal-Mart just to name a few. Just think of the impact your own business will have on the world and keep going.

What makes your shop unique?
My shop is not only a boutique for kurvy women it’s also a lifestyle brand and sisterhood that we are building. We are helping women be proud to be kurvy and we not only care about what they wear, we care about helping them on the inside. We want to help build their self-confidence and self-esteem. We want them to know that everyone is not meant to be a size 0, 2, or 4. Be that size 12, 14, or 16 and be proud!

How would you describe your personal style?
WOW! My personal style depends on my mood for the day, lol. There are days I love to be a classy sexy and there are days I love to be very laid back in my yoga pants. So I would describe my style as classy, sexy, and laid back. When I dress up I go all out because when I walk into a room I want them to notice me.

What’s next for your company?
A lot is in the works for Kurvy Inc! Over the next few months we will be doing a photo shoot for our yearly Kurvy Girl Calendar, developing workshops, designing my first swimwear line, and by the end of the year we will be launching KonViction Cosmetics. It has been a very busy year already but we plan on even having a busier 2013!
