Today’s, Do What You Love feature comes from Moe Murdock. He is a Digital-Design-Illustrator, (an Electronic Artist) living in the Jersey City area. He is passionate about beefing up his art skills and is also passionate about Donkey Kong. Read on!
How did you get into art? Tell me how and when everything started.
Well, I have always been artistic. When I was little I would ask my father (who is actually a good artist himself) to draw various pictures for me. It would always be a superhero or a comic book character of some sort. Then when he was done, he would give it to me and then I would draw all over it. Adding my own touches. I guess that it’s always stuck with me.
When did you first know that you wanted to be artist?
That was more recent. I think that I always had the artistic inclination, but never really acknowledged it until now. I think that I have now hit the fork in the road, and I have decided to embrace what has always been there. It’s about time that I did that, and own that creativity.
If you weren’t in the art industry, what would you like to be doing?
Trying to get into it….that was me a few months ago. I am glad that I am not there anymore and that I have a clearer focus of where I want to go.
How would you describe your personal style?
Well, I am experimenting with a lot of different tools. There are the traditional tools such as pen and ink and paints, and then there are also the digital tools, like computer software and various programs available. I never went to school for art, so a lot of what I am doing is self-taught, or things that I have picked up by experimenting and so on. It never really stops because you can basically try something new and find an entirely new direction to express yourself. I plan on taking classes soon, as this will be a way to build on my skills some more and go from there.
Who is your favorite artist?
There are a ton. I am a fan of various comic book artists. I think that if I could ever do what they can do I would be super happy! Hopefully it will come with time.
If you had a choice of all the artists in the world, who would you prefer to work for? Why? I think that in a perfect world I would work with Drew Struzan. He is the artist who painted and designed the majority of movie posters for movies that I grew up with. Goonies, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Star Wars. He’s an amazing iconic painter.
Are there any special projects you would like to work on?
I am a fan of comic books, and movies and sci-fi. If I were able to do character design or creative design for movies, films and video games, that would be really awesome. That might be my dream I think.
Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?
My favorite magazine is “Wizard”, which is a comic book and pop culture art magazine. I also thumb through “Sketch Magazine”, and another magazine called “Rough Sketch”.
There is also another magazine called “Illustration Magazine” which I will probably start to read as well. On top of that I also read various blogs of other artists to look for hints and tricks to improve on my style.
What motivates you?
I am pretty self motivated and disciplined. However when I have a tough day at work, or if I am feeling low of creative energy, I look to things on my walls (posters, etc.). I also look at other things that are visually stimulating, well as comics and movies and other things that I draw inspirations from. I also go to museums, and look for interesting exhibits and other creative events. There are things all over NY as long as you keep your eyes open.
What do you do in your down time?
Oddly enough I barely have any. Well, I guess that’s not completely true. I am always trying to keep productive and move myself forward. However sometimes you got to take a break every now and again. I usually relax with video games, catching up on tv.
Reading. Sometimes I just need to step away from the computer and get out and see something other than what I am working on. That way when I come back I am recharged and ready to go all over again.
What’s next for you?
My focus now is going to be improving my skills, taking a class, and standing ready to embrace opportunities that may come my way.
