Tell me how and when everything started.
Four years ago, I was working as a graphic designer for a screen printing company. Each summer I designed hundreds of shirts for sororities and fraternities around San Diego. I found that I really enjoyed t-shirt design and began to think about clothing designs that would cater to the “teen to college aged girl.” For a year I tinkered with names and designs. A couple years later I decided to put all of my energy into launching a clothing line, and Touch Of Shine (TOS) was born.
When did you first know that you wanted to be a business owner?
Not that this is a funny question… But it makes me laugh. I still sometimes do not “feel” like I am business owner. Granted there was a lot I had to learn about owning/ operating your own business, and am still learning everyday. However when it comes to doing something you enjoy it doesn’t feel like work. I am excited about the designs I create, and eager to share them with other girls.
What advice would you give someone considering a similar path?
I would advise them to do a lot of research first, and talk to other people who started similar businesses. In my experience you can learn a lot from experienced business owners, and many are willing to share their failures and triumphs.
What makes your shop unique?
TOS is unique to San Diego because it has a fresh “beach meets street” vibe. Many of our designs transition well from day to night; wear our “Shine On” tank to the beach during the day, throw on a blazer and your ready to hit the town that night. Our sassy call to action designs are what make us “stand out.” The typical TOS girl is light-hearted, loves to laugh and is not to be taken too literally.
How would you describe your personal style?
My personal style is simple and clean, “with a Touch Of Shine.” I generally wear jeans and a tank top or tee shirt, but like to as I call it “add a touch of shine” with a bright blazer and a stylish pair of wedges. I seek out comfortable stylish clothes. I believe that you can look great without having to “suffer for fashion.”
What’s next for your company?
It is a very exciting summer for TOS. We are looking forward to getting involved with a couple charities in San Diego, collaborating with them on limited edition designs with a portion of the proceeds going towards benefiting their set cause. We’re also currently looking for OUTshine Ambassadors- those young ladies who actively work towards making a positive impact to our local community, and sponsor them. We’ll also be participating in a number of local events, so keep your eye out for us and stop by to say hello!
