How did you got into fashion?
Well it was a few years ago. I hand knitted a hobo style bag for my sister as a birthday present. One day while at the grocery store my sister ran into a friend from church. Her girlfriend was going away, the next day, on a trip to Africa doing missionary work. She loved my sister’s bag so much that she offered to buy it from her in the grocery store parking lot. My sister carried the contents of her purse home in a plastic grocery bag. When she told me this story I couldn’t believe it. That’s when I knew I should sell bags.
When did you first know that you wanted to be in the fashion industry?
Two years ago. My family encouraged me to sell my handbags online.I started out on eBay and I sold quite a few. That’s when I knew I had something. It is my dream to someday have my own handbag line.
If you weren’t in the fashion industry, what would you like to be doing?
I am an artist and I design artwork for autism awareness mainly for t-shirts. My son who’s 7 years old has autism and that why I like to work from home so I can be there for him.
Tell us about your fabulous store and what products or serviced do you offered?
My store is called Artisan Handbags and More. I hand knit and hand crochet handbags that I design. I do all kinds of bags in a variety of materials. I combine knitting with beads or fabric. Or handmade handles of a store bought one. Each bag has it’s own personality, just like each woman is unique.
I also hand bead purse hooks. I do customs orders as well. Last summer, a bride’s contacted me for a custom designed knitted handbag to go with her gown. She also wanted hand beaded purse hooks for her bride’s maids to give as a gift.
How would you describe your personal style? Who are your favorite designers?
I would say my style is classic. I love fashions that will always be in style. My favorite designers are from the knitting world. I like Nicky Epstein for her creativity in her classic signature designs. I also like Melissa Leapman for her ability to design beautiful cabled sweaters and blankets.
If you had a choice of all designers in the world, who would you prefer to work for? Why?
That’s a tough question. I cannot decide. I would like to work for Vogue Knitting magazine. I would like to learn all about the design process of their innovative and chic patterns.
Are there any special projects you would like to work on?
I am currently working on writing knitting patterns to sell.
Which magazines do you read? Which magazine is your favorite?
Vogue Knitting, Knitter’s Magazine, Cast On, and Interweave Knits.
Vogue knitting is my favorite. Vogue has always been associated with beautiful classy fashions putting knitting into the world of high fashion.
What do you see in the stores that you think is really great?
I always smile when I see some big chunky knitted or crochet accessories among all the other brands. They stand out to me and I am I find myself drawn to th
em. I have to touch them and see how they are made.
What motivates you?
My imagination, I see possibilities in everything. My mind goes to work. I try to translate what I see into a design. I sketch, work out color combinations and what knitting or crochet technique(s) works best for that particular design.
What’s next for you?
I am working toward my goal to become a knit designer. My goal is to have my own handbag line someday. I’d also like my being patterns published in a knit magazine or have my own book.
